Looks like cases involving the new Omicron variant are popping up everywhere the officials look for it and believe you me they’re looking hard. But the good news, for us that want to see an end to the madness is that the variant — while it does seem even more infectious than Delta — is very mild in symptoms. So much so, that as of late yesterday, there have been ZERO deaths reported involving the new variant. Initial tests suggest that natural immunity is just as effective against Omicron, even if the variant can escape injection immunity to some extent, sorry Dr. Fauci!

Dare they say it, but some scientists are speculating that Omicron may herald the end of the pandemic. The timing would be consistent with when the 1918 pandemic ended, about two years in. The reason they think this might be the end is because it’s so infectious and it could out-compete all the other strains; since it’s so mild, most folks will get sick and recover without even knowing it, rushing the general population to final herd immunity.

You would think that major media would be calling for a day of mourning upon hearing this news, but for some strange reason major media had some surprisingly mild takes on the news. The Wall Street Journal published an op-ed yesterday headlined, “Omicron: Keep Calm and Carry On.” If that’s not enough of a signal that the narrative is dead, it may be a signal that it’s at least dying, given how quickly the media can change their mind, I would suggest you clip it out and save it. For the past 18 months, papers couldn’t run an article without using the words “worry, panic & fear” in the headlines.
“Keep calm” is a welcome change!

The op-ed by Marc Siegal starts this way:
“The Omicron variant may be what we need to learn to live with Covid, especially if it turns out to be much milder than Delta, as it appears, and overtakes it. That would signal the actual end of the pandemic and the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 into an endemic, far less dangerous pathogen.”

Of course, not all of the media is ready to let the narrative go, The New York Times while not conceding the days of fear are over, still had a completely new tone. Now they didn’t do anything as foolhardy as advising folks to “keep calm,” they DIDN’T encourage them to panic either if you can believe it. In an article yesterday, the Times’ subhead said, “World leaders and public health experts have urged people not to panic — and to get vaccinated, if they can.”

NOT to panic, say it isn’t so, some right wingers must have seized the paper for the day.

If Omicron continues to be less virulent, it would be following the script on how viruses normally act. As they evolve to become more transmissible and less virulent. It only takes one good variant to end a pandemic for good. I think the media is beginning to realize that the public has “COVID fatigue” and more and more of them are not buying into the “fear porn” and they can see that when it comes to Omicron, the public’s not picking up what the public health officials and media are putting down. The fact that the media is rejecting the public health crowd’s fear mongering on Omicron is significant evidence that we MAY be close to the end.

Don’t give up, hang in there the tide is turning, more and more folks are beginning to wake up and the government officials and public health officials can sense it, that’s why some of them are trying to double down even more!
