When it comes to implementing a digital currency in Canada, The Bank of Canada is moving out of its research phase into a central bank digital currency development phase, its governor said on Dec. 12, with consultations on the issue to take place with, we Canadians in 2023.
“I think over time, it is conceivable that in a more digital economy, it might make sense to give Canadians the ability to hold central bank money in digital format. So we’re making sure we’re getting ready,” Bank of Canada (BoC) Governor Tiff Macklem said in his year-end address hosted by the Business Council of British Columbia.
“We did a lot of research into what a central bank digital currency would mean, how to design one, and we’re now moving more from the sort of ‘R’ part of R&D [Research and Development] to the ‘D’ part and moving into developments.”
Macklem said the decision to move to adopt a central bank digital currency (CBDC) would not come from the BoC but rather from Parliament.
Well given the desire of our Canadian politicians to “govern Canadians harder” and the willingness and desire of a large swath of Canadians to bend over and embrace the harder governing, it’s a no-brainer as to which way the folks in Ottawa are bound to go.
Macklem gave a speech centred around inflation and the actions taken by the central bank to bring it under control, but he also addressed the topic of CBDC during a “fireside chat” after his speech.
What Macklem obviously failed to mention is the root causes of the current inflation, you know things like government policies surrounding Covid, the environment, social justice pet projects, global spending, in a nutshell, government itself!
The governor explained some of the factors that could lead to Canada adopting a digital currency, including if there was a rapid decline in the demand for physical banknotes.
Another factor would be if a stable private sector coin not denominated in Canadian dollars became broadly used.
Macklem said these scenarios could lead to Canada losing its monetary sovereignty.
But on these two cases, the governor said these situations haven’t reached that point.
“Just to be clear, demand for banknotes actually continues to rise. It’s not rising, as quickly as nominal GDP, but it is continuing to rise. It’s certainly not collapsing,” said Macklem.
He also said that Facebook’s (now Meta) attempt to create a currency with Diem is “pretty much a dead project.”
Early this year the assets of the Diem cryptocurrency venture were sold by Meta.
Some of the questions Macklem said the consultations will look into include “what are Canadians’ interests in a digital currency, what are their expectations, and what sort of elements would be important to them.”
I’m thinking “financial freedom” would be the primary one for me, what assurance could you offer me that should & if my government overlords disagree with me politically and or ideologically, my money doesn’t just suddenly get “frozen” but worse yet “disappear” all together! With paper currency at least I have no plan B in the event of this occurring.
Macklem had premised what he said on CBDC by first criticizing other forms of cryptocurrencies, saying they’re “incredibly volatile” and “not very good stores of value.”
“Most of the activity in crypto is largely speculative investment,” he said.
The Bank of Canada’s website says that if a CBDC were issued, “individuals and businesses could use it to pay for products or services using a mobile phone or a special card or device.”
“It would be like cash but with the added benefit of being able to be used online.”
Those activities can already be conducted using bank and credit cards and smartphone applications.
Not sure about you, but I don’t need more convenience when it comes to spending my money, what’s most important for me is that it continues to remain “my money” and unlike all thing’s big government and big brother, it’s not viewed by them as “their money!” Farfetched, not so, just think mandates, that’s when your body became their choice!
So, I urge all of you to get a hold of your MP’s and Senators and let them know that your content with Canadian currency the way it is, and you’re not fond of the government creating, regulating, implementing and mandating a digital currency! If you think that these folks have little reason to be accountable to you now, give them this power and they’ll be no way of holding them to account again! Just think truckers’ convoy and the freezing of accounts, but only a 100 times worse!
In this video I'll share with you why I think self-censorship is even far worse than censorship legislation that political tyrants are trying to pass worldwide.
You can watch it directly on Locals, as well on my Rumble channel but not on YouTube as due to censorship I still can't post for 4 more days.
As always I welcome your uncensored opinions and thoughts!
In this video I'll share my thoughts on why some experts, politicians and bureaucratic tyrants are still pushing their failed policies and what we need to do in response.
As always I welcome your thoughts and comments.
Yes our cowardly Prime Minister is at it again, in a recent speech and in an attempt to "memory hole" the facts, he now claims that he never mandated mass vaccinations for Canadians, but only incentivized them for doing so!
Given I'm banned from YouTube currently I'll only be posting it to Rumble as well will post it directly on my Locals so you can watch it there as well.
I'll share my thoughts and as always welcome your comments!
In case you missed it, there was an attempted assassination of former President Trump, and in this video I'll share my thoughts on how mainstream media responded and how President Trump responded!
